Dr. Gainforth is the Director of UBC’s Centre for Health Behaviour Change and the Associate Director of Meaningful Engagement within the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries. She is a leader in meaningful engagement and research coproduction\, helping to bridge gaps between researchers and those who use research. Through her work\, she has led an international partnership who co-developed guiding principles for conducting and disseminating spinal cord injury (SCI) research in partnership.

As a trained writer and communications professional\, it horrifies Michaela that her professional titles cannot be read out loud without taking a very deep breath first. She is the Interim Chief Operations Officer (COO) as well as the Chief Impact and Communications Officer (CICO) for the leading health outcomes research centre in B.C\, the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes (Advancing Health)\, as well as the Knowledge Mobilization Lead for the Canada-wide clinical trials leader\, CIHR Pan-Canadian Network for HIV and STBBI Clinical Trials Research (CTN+). Within these organizations\, Michaela is responsible for the development of strategies encompassing knowledge translation and mobilization across the research lifecycle\, external and internal communications\, public affairs including public and media relations\, strategic communications\, crisis and change management\, and brand reputation management. Michaela leads a highly skilled team working to support over 180 clinicians and scientists in evolving healthcare policy and practice in Canada and globally. Recognizing the role knowledge translation plays in bridging the research-practice gap\, she trains scientists\, clinicians\, and research support staff in communications and knowledge translation best practices and provides mentorship and coaching to early career researchers and established researchers. Michaela has been working in communications and knowledge translation field for more than 15 years and within the health sector for over 10 years\, crafting and sharing stories of exceptional research\, care and innovation. \n  \nMuluba Habanyama currently serves as the Director of Communications and Programs at the Ontario AIDS Network and holds multiple national leadership roles\, including Co-Lead of the Knowledge Mobilization Hub and Co-Lead of the Community Leadership Team at the CIHR Pan-Canadian Network for HIV/AIDS and STBBI Clinical Trials Research. Additionally\, Muluba is the National Spokesperson for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR)\, where she amplifies the voices of communities affected by HIV across Canada.\nWith a professional foundation in journalism and community-based research\, Muluba brings a unique lens to the intersection of public health\, communications\, and lived experience. Her research and advocacy work are grounded in equity\, lived experience\, and community-driven impact. Her areas of focus include HIV stigma reduction\, the unique health needs of perinatally infected young adults\, women’s health and equitable access to care\, and systemic change within health systems. She is committed to bridging the gap between research and community through meaningful engagement and knowledge mobilization.\nMuluba is an accomplished communicator and published author\, with work featured in academic journals such as the Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (JIAPAC)\, as well as individual writing in mainstream outlets including Flare Magazine\, Huffington Post\, and MTV. She has received several accolades for her contributions to public health and advocacy\, including the 2021 Premier’s Award and the 2025 King Charles ||| Coronation Medal.\nRecognized nationally as a community leader and collaborator\, known for her ability to work across sectors and disciplines to mobilize knowledge and foster meaningful community-research partnerships. She brings extensive experience working alongside researchers\, clinicians\, and frontline service providers to ensure research initiatives reflect and respond to the realities of those most affected. \n  \nEnrico Mandarino has over 25 years of experience as a healthcare professional within the hospital\, educational and pharmaceutical industries. His breadth of experience in healthcare includes progressive positions in diagnostic and clinical research\, health policy and quality assurance. Enrico holds an associates degree in Medical Laboratory Science and a postgraduate certificate as a Clinical Research Associate from the Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences. As a Regulated Health Professional\, he maintains an active practicing registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. He is a health sociologist by training with extensive experience as a health services researcher and implementation scientist. Dr. Graham is a pioneer in the fields of knowledge translation and implementation science being the originator of such frameworks and models as the Knowledge to Action Framework\, Ottawa Model of Research Use\, and most recently\, Implementation Roadmap. From 2006-2012 he was seconded to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research as Vice President of Knowledge Translation. He has been inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences\, New York Academy of Medicine and Royal Society of Canada and twice awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal (2002\, 2012) for contributions to research. \nDr. Robert McLean is a Senior Program Specialist in Global Health at Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) where he leads IDRC’s flagship research program Advancing Research for Climate and Health. Rob has worked in research evaluation and knowledge translation in the academic and research funding domains\, with an interest in collaborative approaches to knowledge generation. Since 2010\, she has been working as a research collaborator at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation\, the largest public health institution in Latin America. In 2021\, she began her postdoctoral fellowship at the Canada Research Chair in Shared Decision Making and Knowledge Mobilization at Université Laval. She has since been working on implementation science with the goal of demonstrating and scaling the impact of interventions that can enhance people’s experiences with healthcare systems. She is particularly interested in patient-centered approaches in research. It is crucial for her to bring a sociological perspective\, representing Global South knowledge\, to the field of public health. Keila serves as the Inclusion\, Diversity\, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Consultant for Can-SOLVE CKD\, a CIHR SPOR network\, where she led a pan-Canadian needs assessment to capture and integrate IDEA principles. Dr. Sauro’s research focuses on improving the quality and safety of care for patients with cancer\, especially those who undergo major surgical treatment\, to optimize the health of these patients. Dr. Sauro has a particular interest in leveraging routinely collected administrative data to evaluate the quality of healthcare and the effectiveness of implementing interventions to improve healthcare delivery. She uses diverse methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) to ask and appropriately answer clinically relevant research questions.

Explain some common challenges and barriers that frustrate patient partners\n4. Examine how you might be more open to patient co-partnership in research. \nBiography: Linda Hunter is a semi-retired executive health care leader and former Chief Nurse Executive and ICU nurse who has worked locally\, nationally\, and internationally in healthcare over the last 35 years. Linda has worked clinically\, in education\, and administration\, throughout the continuum of care in healthcare. Linda is an expert in quality improvement and performance measurement and has worked extensively in the quality and patient safety fields in healthcare. Linda is also a patient and lives with spinal stenosis\, osteoarthritis\, fibromyalgia\, and severe degenerative disc disease and has lived with chronic pain for over 15 years. Linda is a CIHR Patient Engagement Research Ambassador for the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis and is a member of the Institute’s Advisory Board. She has co-developed online educational modules for patients and researchers about Patient Engagement in Research. Linda is an Essential Caregiver to her Mum\, who lives with dementia\, and is a volunteer who provides palliative and end-of-life care to residents in LTC.\nLinda states: “It is vital that the patient voice is respected\, listened to\, and incorporated into change in the delivery of health care services\, including research. Patients are experts about their disease and the lived experience. They are becoming more informed and knowledgeable\, and it is imperative that they are included in the development of plans of what is researched and help bring that to the clinical world.”

Norton\, Ph.D.\, is a Program Director in Implementation Science in the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Norton’s scientific interests include de-implementation of ineffective practices\, pragmatic trials of implementation strategies\, rapid cycle interventional research in cancer care delivery\, and methodological and measurement issues in implementation science.
